Dickinson Memorial Approves Purchase of new 3-D Mammography with Tomosynthesis
Dickinson County Healthcare System continues to improve the service it provides our community and its surrounding areas. The announcement of the purchase of the Hologic Genius 3D Mammography with Tomosynthesis is a giant step towards helping our patients win the fight against breast cancer. DCHS Imaging Manager, Sherry Koepp states, “Like traditional Mammography, 3D Mammography uses X-rays to produce images of breast tissue in order to detect cancer, calcification, and other abnormalities. However, the Genius 3D Mammogram captures multiple images or slices of the breast from several different angles creating a multi-layered breast image, similar to turning pages in a book. These multiple images reduce challenges for Radiologists in identifying overlapping structures in the breast thus providing a more accurate diagnosis. It has statistically proven to detect 41% more invasive cancers earlier while reducing call back for additional views by 40%.” Dickinson Memorial Hospital Radiologist, Dr. Dan Kreider expounded, “3D breast Tomosynthesis is an exciting advancement, I have experience with this technology in my former practice and I was able to diagnose cancers as small as 2-3 mm with earlier detection compared to 2D mammography. It shows breast tissue in one millimeter slices, helping to dismiss falsely suspicious areas and find breast cancer earlier.” The bottom line; this new technology allows Dickinson Memorial Hospital to do a much better job of identifying a potential problem in its earliest stages and early detection directly translates into saving lives!
DCHS offers a unique opportunity to see how 3D Mammography really works. Hologic’s Genius 3D Mammography Coach IS visiting Dickinson Memorial Hospital Tuesday, September 13, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm CST. The coach will be on display in our Emergency Department parking lot. Visit and receive a product demonstration and the opportunity to review clinical cases with Hologic experts. The public is welcome and reservations are not necessary.
