• Mammography

Dickinson Memorial Hospital provies onsite digital mammography services in comfortable, relaxing environment.

Digital mammography affords the following benefits:

    • X-ray is still used to produce the image, but the radiology dose for the patient is slightly less.
    • Digital technology is also better for younger women and those with denser breast tissue.
    • Like a digital camera, no film is involved.  The image is stored on computer software, which allows for the manipulation of the image in order to view it from multiple angles and to zoom-in on a particular area of concern.
    • Consequently, it is logical to expect that fewer images may be necessary, and patients will experience fewer call backs for additional imaging.
    • Digital technology also makes it much easier for radiologists to compare current findings with images taken in prior years.
    • Digital technology is much more portable.  Images can be placed on a CD instead of heavy, cumbersome film and can be mailed or taken to other facilities as needed.  The digitized images can also be accessed via computer within the Dickinson system from any physician’s office.
    • Patients will also notice the new padded paddles so there is less discomfort when the breast is compressed.
    • Finally, all insurers cover digital mammography including Medicare.
